There’s little question that regardless of the time at which a person plans to retire, be that early or late, the best advice remains the same.  The key component to a comfortable retirement is  the financial planning that goes into its preparation.

A person looking forward to a comfortable retirement doesn’t need a degree in finance and doesn’t have to read a bunch of books to understand the important action steps.  But, what they do need is a retirement planning blueprint.  A strategy that won’t leave her/him stuck at the end of the cul-de-sac … a strategy that includes the psychological components to retirement as well as the financial.

Retirement years open a wonderful world of freedom and flexibility for most people, but it’s more than a date, it’s a new life.  It’s a new network of friends and new goals that give some measure of fulfillment.  It’s becoming active with different faces in new environments.

Something as simple and common as a golf game, for example, is totally different.  I still play golf occasionally with some of my former legal colleagues.  But, without the constant day to day interaction it isn’t the same, and I’ve noticed that as the years have gone by, there’s a waning of those contacts.  The face of retirement is new friends and new goals, big and small, outside my former workplace.

Sometimes there’s comfort just knowing the comfortable retirement lifestyle imagined is not going to come together immediately.  But, a disciplined retirement planning blueprint, diligently engineered and followed, will help the boomer retiree develop realistic objectives.
