In his book, The 80/20 Principle: The Secret to Success by Achieving More with Less, entrepreneur, management consultant, author, Richard Koch describes the Pareto Principle, as follows:

“The 80/20 Principle asserts that a minority of causes, inputs, or effort usually leads to a majority of the results, outputs, or rewards.  Taken literally, this means that, for example, 80 percent of what you achieve in your job comes from 20 percent of the time spent.  Thus, for all practical purposes, four-fifths of the effort—a dominant part of it—is largely irrelevant.”

Founded on early research which revealed that in every economy, in every country, in every period of time, 20% of people control about 80% of the wealth, the Principle now finds near universal application to virtually all human activity.

For example:

20% of sales people generate 80% of the sales.

20% of customers generate 80% of revenue.

20% of one’s daily activities generate 80% of their income.

And, so on.

Traffic is the life-blood of any business;  especially the business of an online marketing enterprise.   Consequently, the successful concentrate the significant percentage of their marketing efforts on traffic generating strategies.

Guided by the 80/20 Rule, if 80% of a successful marketer’s time and energy  is necessarily concentrated on traffic generation activities, only 20% is then left for actual income production (sales).
