Meanwhile, the federal government has already begun paying out more in social security benefits than it’s taking in, and many state and local public pension programs are considerably under funded.  For example, a recent Stanford University Study found that the three largest pension funds in California (California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the University of California Retirement System (UCRS), which together administer pensions for approximately 2.6 million Californians) were as much as $500 billion short of meeting retiree benefit obligations.

Another recent Study by Robert Novy-Marx of the University of Rochester and Joshua D. Rauh of Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management found the 50 states are collectively facing $5.17 trillion in pension obligations, but only have $1.94 trillion set aside; a combined projected deficit of $3.2 trillion.

They calculated that to fully fund state and local pension systems in the U.S. over the next 30 years, contributions to these systems would have to immediately increase by a factor of 2.5.  This represents an average state and local government tax increase of $1,398 per U.S. household per year over and above revenues generated by projected economic growth.

These figures are calculated on projected economic growth.  Of course, economic growth has been stagnating over the last few years.  This fact alone paints an even bleaker picture.

One may ask, where in the world is all the money going to come from.  Most states, including large states like California, along with many semi-private sector businesses like the U.S. Postal Service, are already almost completely broke and on the verge of bankruptcy.

These days, it seems, whenever a big financial crisis comes along everyone looks to the federal government to fix the problem.  The fact is, however, that after trying to fix crisis after crisis the federal government is flat broke.
